On April 7th, 2013, Rehtaeh Parsons passed away after an internal battle brought on by cyberbullying and violence.

One year since the tragedy, much has been done to change the way we look at these issues, not only nationally, but on a global scale.

Parsons’ father Glen Canning told News 95.7, although his daughter’s story is tragic, it has brought on a positive change for bullying awareness she would have been proud of.

However, Canning is looking forward to the year ahead and hopes to change the discourse on sexual violence.

“We’re hoping to make it at the forefront of conversations in Canada, in schools, high schools and universities, and in our government,” explained Canning.

He added telling a friend how much you care about them could prevent more than you realize.

“I think if Rehtaeh knew that there were so many people who cared about her, and really, truly, powerfully cared about her, she may still be here today,” said Canning.

Canning urges any victims of bullying to speak out rather than stay silent.
